PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a wire having remarkably little slag formation compared with gas shielded arc welding using conventional metallic flux cored wire, and also for producing welded joints having high fatigue strength. SOLUTION: The wire is for the gas shielded arc welding of a steel plate having a thickness of 1.0-5.0 mm and a strength of 440-980 MPa. The wire contains, by mass% based on the whole wire, 0.001-0.20% C exclusive of SiC, 0.6-1.2% SiC, 0.05-1.2% Si exclusive of SiC and SiO<SB>2</SB>, 0.2-3.0% Mn,≤0.03% P,≤0.02% S, and 0.05-0.40% in total of one or more of SiO<SB>2</SB>, Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, Na<SB>2</SB>O and K<SB>2</SB>O, the balance being iron and unavoidable impurities, with the proviso that SiC and one or more of SiO<SB>2</SB>, Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, Na<SB>2</SB>O and K<SB>2</SB>O are contained at least as the flux in a steel sheath.
