PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focusing detection device capable of high speed processing. SOLUTION: The focusing detection device calculates the finite difference and the quadratic differential of at least two or more pieces of luminance information having different blur, that is, luminance information formed by light passing through at least a part of an optical system to form an image with light from a subject at a predetermined position, calculates a blur parameter corresponding to a subject distance by a division of a finite difference value and the mean value of the quadratic differential, and refers to a storage means in which relation between the focusing position of the light from the subject and the blur parameter is stored, then obtains the focusing position corresponding to the calculated blur parameter. The focusing detection device has an area extraction part 30A to extract an area for focusing detection out of areas included in the luminance information based on the value of the quadratic differential for at least one of two or more pieces of luminance information having the different blur.
