PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic sensor for reducing the distance between a thin-film magnetism detection part and a magnetic medium, and having high detection sensitivity, and to provide an encoder using the same. SOLUTION: This magnetic sensor is mounted on an external connection substrate with a space left by the magnetic medium, and is equipped an insulating substrate and the thin-film magnetism detection part formed on an opposite surface of the insulating substrate, the opposite surface standing opposite to the magnetic medium. One end of a local electrode is electrically connected to the detection part. The one end extends substantially parallel to the opposite surface. The other end of the local electrode extends along a side surface of the insulating substrate to external connection substrate wiring formed on the connection substrate. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
