PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating drainage capable of suitably removing ammonia contained in the drainage. SOLUTION: The method for treating the drainage which treats the drainage by nitrifying and denitrifying the drainage containing ammonia with activate sludge comprises controlling the concentration of soluble sodium ions in the activated sludge in the range of not less than 400 ppm and not more than 3,000 ppm, or the concentration of soluble calcium ions in the activated sludge in the range of not less than 800 ppm and not more than 3,500 ppm; and the electric conductivity of the activated sludge in the range of not less than 0.8 S/M and not more than 1.3 S/M. The activity of the sludge can be maintained or enhanced. When denitrification bacteria are exposed in an aerobic tank and nitrification bacteria are exposed in an anaerobic tank, the deactivation speed of each of the bacteria can be reduced. When the drainage including no BOD component other than high-concentration ammonia is treated or the like, each reaction speed of nitrification and denitrification can be increased.
