OPTICAL TRANSMITTER AND BIAS CONTROL METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmitter of which the bias point is automatically adjusted to maintain the most suitable extinction ratio.

SOLUTION: The optical transmitter 100 includes: an external modulator 120 which outputs an optical signal modulated in accordance with an input electric signal; a high-side amplitude detection part 151 which detects a variation width of a maximum output on a high output side of the optical signal outputted from the external modulator 120; a low-side amplitude detection part 152 which detects a variation width of a minimum output on a low output side; a comparing part 155 which compares the variation width of the maximum output and the variation width of the minimum output which are detected by the high-side amplitude detection part 151 and the low-side amplitude detection part 152 respectively; and a bias driving part 156 which adjusts a bias potential of the electric signal to be inputted to the external modulator 120, on the basis of a comparison result of the comparing part 155.
