PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a good image while performing reciprocal writing with a minimum number of sensors in an image forming apparatus performing reciprocal writing by scanning the effective image region of a latent image carrier reciprocally with a light beam in the main scanning direction by means of a deflection mirror face. SOLUTION: In order to control going path writing and return path writing, an engine controller adjusts the output timing of a video request signal Vreq to a main controller based on a detection signal Hsync, and controls the reciprocal writing positions by delivering a second waiting time Tw2 to the main controller along with the video request signal Vreq. Since the reciprocal writing positions are controlled while performing reciprocal writing with a single sensor, a latent image can be formed well and thereby an image can be formed well.
