PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data preserving method and a data referring method in response to a disclosure level and a level of importance. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes a means for setting the key area of an original; a means for setting the content area and disclosure level of the original; a data generating means for generating a plurality of kinds of data, which mask the content area, for each disclosure level; a means for judging the disclosure level of the generated data; and a data storage means for storing the generated data in an appropriate storage device in response to the disclosure level.
