PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a universal joint for steering system which surely prevents the generation of abnormal sounds from occurring without inviting the jump of the manufacturing costs, and at the same time, can obtain a smooth steering feeling by reducing a folding torque. SOLUTION: This universal joint 101 for steering system is built up by interposing a needle 10 and a bearing cup 9 between the external rolling surface 61 of a trunnion shaft 6 and the internal side of a bearing hole 4. In the universal joint 101 for steering system, the bearing hole 4 has an oval shape for which the major axis diameter R is taken in the length direction, and a shorter diameter r is taken at the right-angled direction. Since the shorter diameter r is formed to be slightly smaller than the outer diameter (circular) of the bearing cup 9, a gap between both parts becomes zero, and a slight deformation is generated. Since the direction of a force f which is applied to the trunnion shaft 6 when a torque is applied to the universal joint agrees the direction of the minor axis diameter r, there is no gap in this direction until reaching the surface of the bearing hole 4, and even when the torque varies, backlash is not generated.
