A positive electrode (1) is formed by pressure bonding a mixture of a positive electrode active material, formed of a halide of at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn, with an electroconductive material such as graphite powder, to a positive electrode current collecting net (5). A negative electrode (2) is formed of a metallic magnesium plate or the like. A separator (3) formed of polyethylene glycol or the like is held between the positive electrode (1) and the negative electrode (2) to avoid direct contact between the positive electrode (1) and the negative electrode (2). An electrolysis solution (4) is filled into a battery chamber (8), and the battery chamber (8) is hermetically sealed with a gasket (9). A solution prepared by dissolving a suitable metal ion-containing salt in an aprotic organic solvent, for example, a solution of Mg(ACl<SUB>2</SUB>EtBu)<SUB>2</SUB> in tetrahydrofuran (THF), is used as the electrolysis solution (4). The above constitution can provide an electrochemical device that can satisfactorily bring out excellent properties, as a negative electrode active material, for example, a large energy capacity, possessed by a polyvalent metal such as metallic magnesium. |
