PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent wear of a roller 151, caused by the edges of a belt due to a steering operation, without sacrificing the following capability of the belt 101 by the steering operation and to reduce the adverse effects of powder resulting from scraping the roller due to the wear. SOLUTION: The image heating apparatus includes: an endless belt 101 for heating an image t on a recording material P; and a displaceable belt-extending roller 151 that swings the belt 101 in its widthwise direction. In the image heating device 5, the tensile strength of each end area of the surface of the belt-extending roller 151 which is slidable against the corresponding widthwise end of the belt 101 is made greater than that of the middle area thereof.
