There is described a method and apparatus for creating a message at a primary device having data storage and long range communication capabilities. The message may include a header including a destination identifier for the message and a message payload including text data. Audio data is received from a user at a secondary device connected to the primary device over a short range wireless communication link. The audio data is processed to convert the audio data to text data and a destination identifier is obtained for the message. A message is then generated incorporating the text data in the message payload and the destination identifier in the message header. The message is then transmitted to the primary device over the short range wireless communication link.
