Metallic and/or nonmetallic products (3) are made by applying a material (5) layer by layer using a computer-controlled high-energy beam, preferably laser (7) or electron beam. The beam irradiates positions of the material many times in each case. The manufacture of metallic and/or nonmetallic products by freeform sintering and/or melting involves the application of material layer using computer-controlled high energy beam, in particular laser or electron beam. The beam irradiates predetermined positions of the material many times in each case, preferably (m) times, in which (m) is a whole integer greater than 1. Each of the positions is initially heated during the first irradiation to a temperature below the melting point (Tmelt) of the material and during the m-th irradiation to a temperature above Tmelt and is completely melted over the thickness of the layer in such a way that the material fuses at the position to a layer under it. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus (1) for making metallic and/or non-metallic products comprising beam source for generating beam; platform for receiving a material that can be applied in layers; and controller for controlling the beam. |
