The method involves determining a state of charge (SOC) by a weighted combination of an initial value of an expert system with a parameter that is obtained by current integration of an electric current, which flows through a battery (12). A weighting factor is determined dynamically in the operation of the battery. A temporal average value of a parameter is formed for generating an input value of the expert system. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing a method for determining a state of charge of a battery.
