The device has a laser diode (11) and a receiver (12) arranged for detection of information about a part of surrounding located laterally next to a motor vehicle with respect to a driving direction to respective points. A processing device is provided with two processing modes, where one processing mode processes the information for a displacement value of the vehicle from obstacles in the surrounding. Another processing mode processes the information for a predictive value, which represents to what extend the vehicle threatens to deviate from a driveway.
