A process or method for protection of confidential information stored on computers. It has an automated challenge-response function that may appear in different guises and entraps unauthorised users into activating the deletion system. The challenge-response program activates a deletion function that operates covertly. Both functions protect their operation from interference by locking out user interface functionality. The system uses a central encrypted database that is supported by a simple configuration program, which can also present itself in different guises. The deletion program deletes information and metainformation about the selected data and then removes all traces of the process or method so that the attacker has no knowledge there was ever information on the computer or that it was protected. The system may be activated by an interactive function that by its design gives a graphical warning to the operator. The system may be embodied as software or as a device. The challenge may be password based or pictorial based. Alternatively input from keyboard, mouse, biometric device, token, identity card or timers may all be used. The protection process may be involved during system startup (boot) or system log-on.
