In a marine impulse propulsion engine with a device for accelerating and moving a ship, a double-acting, horizontally arranged two-stroke diesel engine is provided in which expanding gases, during every ignition of a compressed, combustible mixture in a cylinder, imparts an impulse to the ship as well as to the two reciprocating and at the same time rotating engine pistons, which are connected to the engine rod and the propeller shaft, extended on either side, and the screw teeth formed on the propeller shaft, to the free end of which a marine propeller is fastened, whereas the other marine propeller, which only rotates and is fastened to the hub of an engine spindle, is given a rotary impulse by means of which the ship is pulled. Here, the other side of the double-acting engine cylinder serves in the second cylinder space to compress the half-expanded and distributed gases in the first cylinder space and to draw in and compress the air in the rear cylinder spaces so that, during expansion of the gases compressed and expanding in the second cylinder space, the engine pistons with the propeller shaft and the propeller are retracted.
