The invention relates to a novel process for the preparation and isolation of alkyloxiranes by reacting alkenes having 7 to 20 C atoms with a solution of a percarboxylic acid having 3 or 4 C atoms in an organic solvent at 40-90 DEG C at a molar ratio of alkene to peracid of 0.9:1 to 5:1, where, in the solution of the percarboxylic acid, certain amounts of water, hydrogen peroxide and mineral acid must not be exceeded, and work-up of the reaction mixture using a combination of extraction and distillation steps. The novel process is particularly economical and environmentally friendly.
