A pivoting shaft (12) coupled to a blade coater (8) adjusts the blade coater for determining a thickness of a glue film (7) transferred to the back (3) of a book block (2) back submerged in a tub. The pivoting shaft is operatively connected to a drive rod of a controllable linear electric motor (17). An application roller transfers the glue to the back of the book block.
