The device has an electrode (6) held at a distance to a retainer region (1). A supply electronics (9) supplies voltage to the electrode and a sample (4) for producing an ionized channel in a gap (7) between the sample and the electrode. A measuring unit measures an electrical measuring parameter, where a deviation of the parameter from a reference parameter leads to a safe disconnection of the device. The parameter is correlated with charge flow of the electrode. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a spark or sheet atom emission spectrometer.
