Aliphatic and alicyclic hydrocarbon are oxidised with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas so as to increase the proportion of alcohol in the product by adding to the hydrocarbons prior to or during the oxidation step a proportion of a dicarboxylic acid, undiluted with a water or a proportion of an ester of a dicarboxylic acid, the oxidation being carried out if desired in the presence of an esterification or ester interchange catalyst. The process may be carried out continuously or otherwise. Suitable hydrocarbons for use as starting materials are aliphatic hydrocarbons containing up to 30 carbon atoms, e.g. n-octane and n-dodecane, and alicyclic hydrocarbons containing up to 12 carbon atoms such as cyclohexane, cyclo-octane and cyclododecane. The dicarboxylic acids, whether used as such or in the form of their esters are preferably those containing 2-12 carbon atoms, e.g. adipic acid. Suitable catalysts for the process are the naphthenates of cobalt and manganese. Examples are given of the oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol with some cyclohexanone, in the presence of adipic acid and dimethyl adipate.
