<p>The invention relates to a method and a system for controlling the operation of a vehicle engine which has its output shaft connected to driving wheels of the vehicle via a manual or semi-automatic gearbox. A restriction value representing the present value of the maximum allowed engine output torque is determined in dependence on a temperature value representing the prevailing oil temperature in the gearbox (4), the restriction value being so chosen that the gearbox oil at the prevailing oil temperature and at an engine output torque corresponding to this restriction value will be capable of protecting the mutual contact surfaces of the inter-engaging gear wheels of the gearbox (4) so as to prevent surface damages in the form of pitting to these contact surfaces. The engine (2) is controlled in dependence on the restriction value (R) so as to restrict the engine output torque in accordance with this restriction value.</p> |
