A system and a method for executing a program in a local computer are provided to enable a user to search a desired shortcut file with a title name of the shortcut file and execute the searched shortcut file by separately indexing/storing shortcut index data related to the title name of the shortcut file stored in the local computer. An indexer(210) indexes shortcut index data by relating to the shortcut file stored in the local computer by using the title name of the shortcut file. A shortcut index database(230) stores the indexed shortcut index data. An input part(220) receives the program query from the user. A searcher(240) searches the shortcut index data related to the program query from the shortcut index database. An executer(250) executes the shortcut file related to the searched shortcut index data. A file scanner(260) searches the shortcut files stored in the local computer. The indexer indexes the shortcut index data for the shortcut file in case that idle time of the local computer is continued over a predetermined time.
