A vertical alignment type transflective LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) is provided to make it possible to perform both a reflective display utilizing a light incident from an observer side and a transmissive display utilizing a light incident from an opposite side of the observer side. An LCD comprises a pair of substrates(1,2) disposed at an observer side and at the opposite side of the observer side, a plurality of pixel electrodes(3), an opposing electrode(20), a reflective layer(17), and a liquid crystal layer(27) sealed between the substrates. Each of the pixel electrodes has a reflective display region corresponding to the reflective layer, and a transmissive display region. The reflective display region of the pixel electrode reflects the light incident from the observer side to the observer side. The transmissive display region of the pixel electrode transmits the light incident from the opposite side to the observer side. A thickness adjusting layer(24) is formed on an inside surface of the substrate at the observer side, wherein the thickness adjusting layer sets the thickness of the liquid crystal layer so that the liquid crystal layer in the reflective display region is smaller than the liquid crystal layer in the transmissive display region.
