An apparatus and a method for displaying an image are provided to enable a viewer to intuitively understand size of a real object broadcasted through a television, thereby eliminating viewer's curiosity in the size of the real object. A reception part receives an image signal. A decoder decodes the image signal and extracts real object size detection information included in the image signal. A format converter enlarges or decreases an image of the decoded image signal. An image signal processing/outputting part processes an image signal outputted from the format converter and outputs the processed image signal to a display unit. A control part receives the real object size detection information and calculates a magnification by which the image is enlarged or decreased to size of a real object. The control part controls the format converter so that it enlarges or decreases the image in accordance with the calculated magnification.
