NAVIGATION SYSTEM HAVING PATH SEARCH FUNCTION BY NUMBER OF INTERSECTION

A navigation system and method are provided to enable a driver to avoid traffic congestion region by searching for at least two courses and selecting the course including a minimum number of cross roads from the searched courses. A GPS(Global Positioning System) module(60) receives position signals from a plurality of satellites in a geostationary orbit and calculates the present position by using the position signals. Map data having roads and cross road information on the roads is stored in a map data DB(30). A storage unit(20) is controlled to store at least two searched courses and the number of cross roads existing on the road of each course. A control unit(10) searches for available courses from the present position to the destination input by a driver in the map data, controls the storage unit to store the searched result, counts the number of cross roads existing on each road of the searched course, and performs map matching with the map data by selecting the course having a minimum number of cross roads.
