The device (1) has a step counting unit (8) including two acceleration sensors (11, 12) in a housing (2). The sensor (11) is operated mechanically, and is arranged in the housing such that it detects an acceleration parallel to a plane on which a human or an animal moves. A pendulum (9) has an oscillating section parallel to the plane and an axis of rotation running parallel or perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of legs of the human or animal, where the device is fastened at the axis of rotation. The other sensor (12) electronically detects a movement of the legs.
