The rotary piston engine (1) has a housing (2), which contains at least one working chamber, which is divided into an intake chamber (11) with a working medium inlet (3) and a compression chamber (12) with a working medium outlet (4). A rotary piston (8), which can be acted upon by a working medium (5) and made to rotate eccentrically by means of a shaft (7), and a control flap (9) supporting its delivery action are arranged in the working chamber. It is intended that the engine be characterised over a wide operating range of the working media (5) both by its functional reliability and by especially quiet running despite extreme loading at high powers. To this end the skirt (20) of the rotary piston (8) is ground in the sealing area (22) in such a way that the cross-section of the skirt (20) and of the cylinder wall (21) of the internal chamber (13) of the housing ring (10) have the same surface curvature. <IMAGE>
