PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal and a manner mode control method which can automatically set a more proper manner mode than a conventional method. SOLUTION: The portable terminal has a position monitoring means for receiving first position information indicating the present position of the portable terminal from a GPS satellite, previously storing second position information indicating the position of a crowd, and determining whether the first position information coincides with the second position information; and a voice collection monitoring means for collecting only voices of people from among sounds around the portable terminal, measuring volume values of the voices of the people, and determining magnitudes of the volume value and a predetermined threshold. When the first and second position information coincide with each other as a result of the determination of the position monitoring means, control is shifted to the voice collection monitoring means. When the volume value exceeds the predetermined threshold as a result of the determination of the voice collection monitoring means, the manner mode is set. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
