PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machine tool which can avoid mutual interference between tools when a tool mounted on a main spindle is exchanged for another tool stored in a tool pocket, and prevents degradation of machining efficiency, and to provide a method of exchanging the tools. SOLUTION: A machining center is formed of a tool magazine having the plurality of tool pockets in which the plurality of tools are storable, and a tool exchanging arm which is rotatable and can grip the tools by means of a pair of grip portions. When the tool mounted on the main shaft is exchanged for the tool stored in the tool magazine, it is determined whether or not the tools gripped by the pairing grip portions of the tool exchanging arm interfere with each other (S3 to S5), and if the tools interfere with each other, tool exchanging operation of one cycle is carried out (S7 to S9). On the other hand, if the tools do not interfere with each other, tool exchanging operation of two cycles is carried out (S11 to S17). COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
