17-oxo-steroid(II) and sulphonylmethylisocyanide(CH-CH2SO2R3) were reacted to give a formamido compd. which was dehydrated to give 17- (isocyano-sulphonylmethylene)-steroid(I). In (I), R1 = H or C1-4 alkyl, or is absent in the case of a double bond between C10 and C1, C5 or C9 ; R2 = H or C1-4 alkyl; R3 = aryl opt. substd. by 1 or more halogen, alkyl, or C1-4 alkoxy; rings A,B,C, and D opt. contain 1 or more double bonds, are opt. substd. by 1 or more OH, amino, O atoms, halogens, alkyl, alkylene, alkoxy or alkoxy gps. and are opt. disubstd. by 1 or more epoxy, methylene, alkylenedioxy, alkylenedithio or alkyleneoxythio gps.
