PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dust detection method of an image reading apparatus capable of surely and accurately detecting dust with less wasteful operation and a small load for detecting the presence of dust at a read position and to provide an image reading apparatus and an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: When an original carrying belt 21 is rotated for reading image data to detect dust so as to determine the presence of dust before start of reading operations of an original, the number of revolutions of the original carrying belt 21 is set higher than the speed at ordinary full-scale reading in order to shorten the time required for dust detection, or the number of revolutions of the original carrying belt 21 is set slower than the speed at the ordinary full-scale reading so as to detect the presence of dust at a low noise sound and low vibration due to fears that high speed driving of the original carrying belt 21 may cause sound , vibration and early deterioration of each member related to reading.
