PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively provide a sliding member which is resistant to a high surface pressure, is superior in abrasion resistance, has a low coefficient of friction and shows excellent slidability for a long period. SOLUTION: This sliding member has a carbon film containing at least one nanocarbon material selected from the group consisting of a carbon nanocoil, a carbon nanotube and a carbon nanofilament, coated at least on the surface which slidably contacts with the opposite member among the surfaces of a substrate composing the sliding member, desirably through a nitrided layer or a sulfurized layer.
