PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the usage of merely a part of a recording region of a recording unit. SOLUTION: In an ink jet recording apparatus, printing can be performed in both the case in which printing is performed based on the left side with respect to the transporting direction X of recording paper P3 and the case in which printing is performed based on the right side with respect to the transporting direction X of the printing paper P3. Specifically, the region for using an ink jet recording head 30 can be changed by moving housing guides 12 and 14 of a housing stocker 10 in a width direction Y. Furthermore, paper discharge guides 62 and 64 of a discharge tray 60 are also moved in the width direction Y. In accordance with the movement, the region of the ink jet recording head 30 from which ink droplets are discharged is also automatically changed (from left-based printing to right-based printing). As a result, usage is not concentrated on merely a partial region of the ink jet recording head 30, so that deterioration in image quality is prevented.
