<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear one-way clutch capable of preventing pumping from occurring and reducing the bearing pressures of engagement elements locking a rod at engaged portions. <P>SOLUTION: In this linear one-way clutch, a cage 7 is assembled in a wedge-like space 6 formed between a conical surface 5 formed on the inner periphery of a housing 1 and the cylindrical outer peripheral surface of the rod 4. The engagement elements 9 are assembled in pockets 8 formed in the cage 7. The cage 7 is biased by an elastic member 14 in the direction that the engagement elements 9 are intruded into the narrow part of the wedge-like space 6. Where the taper angle of the conical surface 5 relative to the rod 4 isθ<SB>0</SB>and the maximum coefficient of friction at contact portions between the engagement elements 9 and the conical surface 5 and between the engagement elements 9 and the rod 4 isμ, the requirementμ>tan (θ<SB>0</SB>/2) is satisfied.
