PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that a body, clothing, or articles are often snagged on a latch part when a door of a closet or the like is opened because the latch part is projected, and that it causes inconvenience in taking out or storing the articles. SOLUTION: The latch device 1 is attached to either of a first member or a second member of which the relative alignment can be changed. Then the latch device 1 is in a state of release when the first member and the second member are in a first alignment, and is in a state of latch when the first member and the second member are in a second alignment. The latch device 1 is provided with a latch body 1d, an energizing means for energizing the latch body 1d, and a change means. The latch body 1d makes impossible the change in alignment between the first member and the second member in the case of the second alignment. The change means changes the direction in which the energizing means energizes the latch body 1d with a shift in a position of either the first member or the second member from the first alignment to the second alignment, and with a shift in a position from the second alignment to the first alignment.
