PURPOSE:To obtain a developing device, with which developed pictures of sufficient densities can always be obtained, by installing a means which rotates a developing agent carrier in the direction opposite to the normal rotating direction during developing operations after completion of development to a developing device. CONSTITUTION:At a developing section, the developing agent which is not consumed by development is returned into a developing agent container 2 by means of the rotation of a sleeve 4 and mixed with the developing agent inside the container 2 by the action of a carrying screw 12. Furthermore, the mixed developing agent is elevated to the vicinity of a blade 6 by the action of a magnetic pole and rotation of the sleeve 4. These operations are repeated. Since the toner has a tendency of decreasing in quantity in the vicinity of the blade 6 when these developing operations are continued, the quantity of the developing agent carried to the developing section for the next developing operations becomes less, resulting in damages in picture quality equality especially when a completely black picture is developed. Therefore, the sleeve 4 is rotated in the opposite direction by about 90 deg. when the developing operations are completed and the rotation of the sleeve 4 is stopped. As a result, the developing agent is restored to the state before starting the developing operations and excellent developing which is free from insufficient density is performed in the next developing operations.
