<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable video appreciation in an optimum state by preventing the malfunction of brightness adjustment control of a screen due to a temporal change of surrounding illuminance. <P>SOLUTION: In the video display device, an optimum backlight luminance set value corresponding to the surrounding illuminance is previously memorized in a memory means and the surrounding illuminance is detected. The backlight luminance set value corresponding to the detected surrounding illuminance is determined from the memory means, and if there is a difference between the determined optimum backlight luminance set value and the backlight luminance set value currently under output and when the magnitude relation thereof exists continually in the same state, the backlight luminance set value is outputted after updating in such a manner that the amount of change in the luminance suppression value at every updating increases gradually toward the optimum backlight luminance set value.
