PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which the position of a cleaning means for cleaning a charging means can be detected through simple configuration while satisfying demand for energy saving. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus for forming an image by an electrophotographic system, a cleaning means 23 for cleaning the discharge electrode 20a of a charging device 2 is moved back and forth along the longitudinal direction of the discharge electrode 20a between the movement starting point A and the returning starting point B, the points being away from the image forming area X1 of a photoreceptor drum, and optical sensors 25a and 25b provided at the starting points A and B respectively receive light from a static eliminator 9 and are shielded from the light by a light shielding section 22a moved integrally with the cleaning means 23, so that the sensors 25a and 25b detect that the cleaning means 23 is positioned in the starting point A and B, respectively.
