PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device for an elevator, having a simple structure and capable of detecting stringlike foreign matters hung down and positioned in a sill, respectively. SOLUTION: In this safety device for the elevator, stop of closing operation of an elevator door 4 or stop of the closing operation and inversion of the elevator door 4 are performed in accordance with foreign matter detection at the time of closing of the door 4. The safety device for the elevator is provided with pressure sensitive sensors 17 integrally arranged from vertical doorstop faces 4a of the elevator door 4 to lower end horizontal faces 4b of the elevator door 4. Stringlike foreign matters in the hanging-down state are detected by the pressure sensitive sensors 17 positioned on the vertical doorstop faces 4a, and stringlike foreign matters positioned on the sill 6 are detected by the pressure sensitive sensors 17 positioned on the lower end horizontal faces 4b.
