PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device wherein power supply to a discharge lamp is stopped by highly accurately detecting abnormal discharge generated in the high voltage part of the discharge lamp lighting device, and a pattern for detecting abnormal discharge and a high voltage capacitor can be achieved with an inexpensive structure. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device 1 includes a transformer 5, a transformer driving circuit 4, and a control circuit 3 for controlling the transformer driving circuit 4. In this discharge lamp lighting device in which the primary side of the transformer 5 is driven by the transformer driving circuit 5, and a discharge lamp 6 is connected to the secondary side of the transformer 5 to light the discharge lamp, the high voltage capacitor 17 formed by a pattern capacitor is provided between one end of the secondary side of the transformer 5 and the discharge lamp 6 is provided, the pattern 11 for detecting discharge which is close to the high voltage capacitor 17 is provided, and a means to stop power supply to the secondary side of the transformer 5 by detecting a voltage induced in the pattern 11 for detecting discharge is provided.
