PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of enhancing the detection the accuracy of the size of an original. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus is provided with positioning members 19, 20 for determining the placement position of the original S on an original platen 5, and guides 46, 47. The guides 46, 47 are interposed extending from the positioning members 19, 20 to a contact glass plate 12 through a prescribed gap 48 from the contact glass 12. A black reference region 50 and a white reference region 51 are respectively provided to the rear sides of the guides 46, 47. Furthermore, the guide 46 is extended along the main scanning direction, and the guide 47 is extended along the subscanning direction. A CPU 101 detects a border position (original edges) between the original S and at least either of the reference regions, on the basis of a received light quantity distribution received by a CIS 67 and calculates the size of the original on the basis of the border position.
