The method is characterized in that, for a source block, the coding mode is selected as a function of the estimates of the coding error and of the estimates of the source block coding cost for the various coding modes tested, the coding error being estimated, for a coding mode, as a function of the sum of the absolute values of the coefficients obtained after mathematical transformation into the frequency domain of the residue block relating to this coding mode and as a function of the sum of the absolute values of the quantized coefficients corresponding to this coding mode. One application is data coding mode decision utilizing the MPEG 2 or MPEG4-AVC standard.
