PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a photodetection means by keeping an excessive amount of light from entering the photodetection means, as to a fluorescence detector for illuminating a fluorescence-labeled specimen with excitation light to detect fluorescence arising from the fluorescence-labeled specimen owing to the illumination of the excitation light. SOLUTION: This fluorescence detector 10 includes an excitation light illumination means 20 for illuminating a micro-plate MP with excitation light FL, a color filter 31, and a fluorescence detection means 30 for detecting light passing through the color filter 31. In this fluorescence detector 10, illumination with the excitation light FL is made to measure a background level with the sensitivity of the detection means 30 adjusted to a checking sensitivity lower than a normal sensitivity. If the background level is higher than a threshold, the color filter 31 is determined to be incompatible to disable measurement after that. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
