PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To implement excellent control stability at low cost without any special sensor, in a control device of a turbocharger. SOLUTION: The control device has the turbocharger with variable diffuser. Based on a map (Fig. 6) defined by a relationship between an engine speed Ne and boost pressure P3, target opening of a diffuser vane is set within a range not exceeding a surge limit. In this map, values are set to make VGC opening constant so that the boost pressure P3 becomes higher as the engine speed Ne gets higher, that is, so as to make an upward line in the Fig. 6.
