PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antibacterial composition which has the same or more antibacterial property as those of paraben compounds and gives excellent senses of use, and to provide a cosmetic and a cleanser which each contains the same. SOLUTION: This antibacterial composition comprises a compound represented by the general formula (1) [R is a 3 to 7C alkyl; (m) and (n) are each independently an integer of 0 to 5, wherein 1≤(m)+(n)≤5], as a component (A) , and one or more kinds of compounds selected from the group consisting of chelate agents, lower mol.wt. polyols, nitrogen-containing nonionic surfactants, nitrogen-containing amphoteric surfactants, plant-originated extracts and zinc compounds as a component (B).
