PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and novel method for producing anα-methylene-γ-butyrolactone compound expected to be a monomer for heat-resistant transparent resins and to be developed in the field of drugs as a skeleton of a substance active against living organisms. SOLUTION: Anα-methylene-γ-butyrolactone compound of formula (2) is obtained by mixing a compound which forms a radical structure of formula (1) upon being irradiated with an actinic radiation with a methacrylic ester, and a strong acid and irradiating the mixture with an actinic radiation or by mixing a compound which forms a radical structure of formula (1) upon being irradiated with an actinic radiation, irradiating the mixture with an actinic radiation, and treating the irradiated mixture with a strong acid. In formulae (1) and (2), R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>, which are independent of each other, are hydrogen atoms or optionally substituted 1 to 6C alkyl groups or may be combined with each other to form a ring.
