PURPOSE:To simplify the structure of a rotary encoder by composing the rotary encoder of a voltage generating circuit, a comparator circuit which discriminates its voltage level and generates a digital value signal, a gate circuit, and an OR gate circuit. CONSTITUTION:The voltage generating circuit 100 generates a voltage signal corresponding to a rotational position at the movable contact of a variable resistor 40 and the voltage signal is inputted as a comparison voltage to comparators 46-48 of the comparator circuit 200 and compared with a reference voltage. Consequently, the digital value signal indicating the voltage level of the voltage signal of the circuit 100 is inputted to the gate circuit 300 from a buffer 51 and AND gates 52 and 53. Then, the circuit 300 outputs a pulse signal to OR gates 75 and 76 constituting the OR gate circuit 400 in response to the direction of the variation of the digital value of the circuit 200. Those gates 75 and 76 output a pulse signal corresponding to the rotating direction of the rotating shaft of the resistor 40 to a terminal 32 or 33. Consequently, the rotary encoder is constituted without any component which requires installation accuracy.
