PURPOSE:To perform a recognition processing with a high recognition rate on an on-line basis by inputting handwriting information as three-dimensional time-series information from coordinate information and stroke pressure information, and performing single DP matching between the coordinate information and stroke pressure information and processing the both simultaneously while weighing them as specified. CONSTITUTION:The coordinate information and stroke pressure information on a handwritten character are inputted as three-dimensional time-series information on an on-line basis and plural input handwritten characters are corrected by the DP matching so as to minimize the integral error of the all patterns, thereby recognizing the handwritten characters from the degrees of differences among the patterns. This recognition system processes the coordinate information and stroke pressure information simultaneously by using a specific weighting coefficient at the time of the DP matching between, for example, an input pattern and a standard pattern, or between input patterns. The DP matching is therefore carried out by a single distortion function between the coordinate information and stroke pressure information by using the specific weighting coefficient, and consequently the total recognition rate is improved greatly and the processing time is shortened.
