The invention proposes that the reflectors (1) for the lamps (2) be installed having narrow gaps between them. Cooling gas (4) is directed at the rear of the reflectors to keep flow losses low but not directly on to the lamps to avoid over cooling them. A protective device (3), in the form of a woven mat, perforated plate or other flat construction, gas and radiation permeable is placed in front of the lamps. The cooling gas passes through the protective device and at the same time builds up a pressure behind the device which holds off contaminating gases, vapors or particles.
