PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an instrument (a handpiece) which prevents a cutter installed on the handpiece from injuring an operator when the operator takes out the handpiece from an instrument holder and also prevents an outer coating of an instrument hose connected to a drawn handpiece from being damaged by a cutter installed on a neighboring handpiece. SOLUTION: A dental handpiece 8 is provided which has the cutter 11 on the distal end. A cover member 10 for covering the cutter 11 is integrated to the handpiece 8 and is slidable with respect to the handpiece. By sliding the cover member 10 along the handpiece 8 in the direction of an arrow F, the cutter 11 is covered by the cover member (Fig. 1 (B)). By sliding the cover member in the direction of an arrow R, the cutter 11 becomes accessible (Fig. 1 (A)).
